The Power of Prevention

Think good health depends solely on your genes? It’s not true…your efforts to stay healthy are just as important. Visit the doctor, get active, eat healthier…even if you have perfect health now, it’s all the more reason to take care of it to make sure it stays perfect. Use your health plan and discover how you can live well and stay healthy.

The power of prevention: Identify issues and live well.
Being healthy is about more than fighting off health problems…it’s about maintaining good health. Preventive care can help you do this. It makes sense…stay on top of your health and you will catch health risks before they become a problem. Otherwise, they might escalate into complications that need expensive treatments.

But I don’t even know what preventive care means!
Many people think preventive care means getting a regular checkup…and it does. But it also goes much further. It means using the benefits covered by your health plan to their full extent to protect your health.

Most of you enroll in healthcare so you’ll be covered when that medical emergency hits. That’s great, but you might not know that your coverage actually offers ways to prevent that emergency from ever hitting in the first place. All of the following examples of preventive care are covered under all Nielsen health plans and can prevent problems from developing.

  • Annual physical exams can identify health risks such as high cholesterol, blood pressure and blood sugar before you get a serious condition.
  • Dental cleanings help spot possible problems before you need that root canal.
  • Vision screenings can discover potential eye problems before a condition like glaucoma develops.
  • Immunizations help build your body’s resistance to illnesses before you get them.
  • Mammograms can identify breast diseases in women before they become more serious.
